Air Brush Makeup Facts EVERY Bride should know.

Let me begin by saying this is MY opinion, what works for me in my artistry, and what techniques I prefer. I’m also posting this to help future clients, as I spend a great deal of time explaining my perspective on this via emails/texts/phone calls before booking and this might help clear a few things up and help a few folks a long the way.
With that being said…..

I kinda hate air brush. But I also think it’s amazing. I have the same emotional commitment with it as I do with my hair. I’m always changing my mind on it…sometimes it’s great…and sometimes I hate it and never wanna see it again.
I honestly believe there is A LOT of confusion out there with the general population about what airbrush is, what it does, and when the best time and place to use it is. And I felt compelled to hop on my soap box and say my piece.

– For starters: Somehow over time, airbrush makeup has kind of become confused with the effects of photo shop airbrushing. In this media saturated day and age we live in, you have no doubt heard of beautiful celebrities and models being airbrushed to an unattainable flawless state of perfection in magazines and things of that nature. Airbrushing in Photoshop has the ability to smooth out the appearance of ones skin in post production thereby eliminating pores, fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars and any other textural discrepancies one may have. Airbrush makeup alone cannot accomplish this. In fact, no ONE product of makeup in the world is guaranteed to make you look more flawless than another…if your artist isn’t up to snuff. It’s just the way it is…so when booking I recommend looking at the persons work in terms of the finished look as opposed to worrying too much about what they used. Technique is EVERYTHING. A good artist can make you look better with cheaper drug store makeup than the majority of people can make themselves look with the most expensive selections you can find at Sephora.

-There’s also this misconception that air brush is water proof. And I’m not sure at all how that came to be. Because its pretty obvious that it’s the product that would ensure whether or not the makeup is in fact water proof NOT the tool that is used to apply it. Airbrush foundations are usually water based but there are also silicone based ones, which is the kind I prefer. Silicon makeup has a tendency to be a bit more water RESISTANT and in liquid foundation versions of it (for example) water just kinda beads up and rolls off..but that still doesn’t make it totally water PROOF. But on the plus side with airbrush makeup, a very thin mist of it is applied to the face and once dry it’s not going to transfer when rubbed or put in contact with DRY surfaces. Meaning on your wedding day when your slow dancing with your new husband and your head should happen to rest on his shoulder…you won’t leave any makeup behind and it won’t remove any of it from your face therefore making it look freshly applied much longer. BUT…hear you me…if you’re a crier…you get caught in the rain…or accidentally spill a little champagne on your mouth when you go take a sip IT WILL STREAK. And once it streaks there is unfortunately nothing that can be done. If you have an airbrush gun in your clutch locked and loaded to go over and blend it out.. there is STILL nothing you can do. This is important to remember when making your final decision on such an important day.

– There are also certain skin types air brush will not work on…at least not on its own. Heavily textured, aging, or acneic skin will not benefit from airbrush alone. Your artist will likely have to apply a layer of foundation and concealer THEN add a mist of the foundation over top. Also, airbrush foundation has a very matte finish usually so if you’re more geared to a dewy or luminous (duminous as I like to say) it might not be your favorite in the world.

For me, what I DONT like about air brush is: there is less room for customization. For photos and special events I like to really take my time layering products to achieve a long-lasting “glow from within” look and I just can’t get the same effect with airbrush no matter how much time I spend doing it. It’s just not the same. There are so many amazing products and tools on the market right now that achieve “an airbrushed finish”. Though I’m not sure why because as I stated before, I don’t really like the finish of the foundation in the first place. It doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the finish of airbrush foundation it seems to just be the term people use when they want to describe something as “flawless”. VERY FEW highly sought after or world-renowned makeup artists use airbrush as their primary makeup applying tool (unless we are talking SFX that is). And its my opinion that the reasons for that are similar to the ones that I have just described. It’s just kinda an out dated technique that was SUPER revolutionary in the 80s/90s and because it sounds so “luxurious” I think people are kinda gravitated towards it without really knowing what they are paying for or SHOULD be paying for.

With that being said there are some very lovely things about airbrush.

-The first is the feeling of it on the skin. If you don’t have problematic skin and can get away without needing a layer of traditionally applied foundation first……it feels incredibly light. Which is ideal for those who rarely (if ever) wear makeup and would probably HATE the feeling of layers of foundation on what is most likely a day when they wanna feel comfortable and most themselves. It’s also VERY good for people with very sensitive skin because as I mentioned before most airbrush foundation is water based.

– It does photograph and appear on HD film beautifully! Because the mist is so crazy fine of an application (and it’s fairly difficult to build to a cakey finish) it doesn’t register on the camera as MAKEUP and looks much more like actual skin. It’s not as easy to have airbrush makeup appear cakey or over applied so this is another benefit to the technique as well. Now this ALSO depends on the caliber of photographer/videographer on some cases but for the most part..the camera LOVES airbrush.

– Another great feature is that so long as the formula of the traditional foundation your artist applies matches the formulation of the airbrush foundation it’s a great finishing touch to your makeup that will yield flawless results and ensure a locked and loaded level of longevity to your makeup. This is my personal favorite way to do airbrush…and the results are amazing.
Either way you decide to have your makeup done (traditional or airbrush) it’s a very personal decision and it should be about what makes you feel the most beautiful.

BOOK RAVE: The Girl On The Train

girl on the train

Welcome to a new series on my blog called BOOK RAVES. I plan on mentioning favorite books briefly in my new modified Monthly Favorites videos then going a bit more in depth here on The new monthly favorites videos will now feature makeup, books, food, lifestyle, paper crafting, fitness, health and music instead of JUST beauty products. Because LETS BE HONEST: Theres only so much I can say about fifty different kinds of pinky nude lipstick and eyeshadow. I have mentioned in faves of the past that I wanna talk more about things that extend beyond makeup and beauty. In this day and age women are held to such a HIGH un realistic standard of airbrushed Kardashian beauty and I just think we need to take the time to nurture our minds and souls. Since I live by that and promote that in my personal life SO MUCH I think its only right that I start producing content that is in alignment with my core values as a person.

With that said…..

I read “The Girl On The Train” in the beginning of the year in one day before it had ANY stars on amazon or iBooks on a whim and “gut feeling”. It’s not an especially LONG book (clocking in at 336 pages) but for me to clear the schedule, not leave the house, ignore all phone calls, texts and emails for a FULL day in the desperate pursuit of finishing a book is SAYING something.

To give you a background story on my preferred reading material: I’m NOT one for chick lit about a hard-working ball busting career woman who has time for everything in life except LOVE (think: ANY movie Kate Hudson or Katherine Heigel have EVER been in)  or “young adult” franchises about love triangles and looking out windows into the rain while songs by “The Fray” play softly in the background.  NOT FOR ME. I’m also KIND of a snob about reading book to movie adaptations. I know that’s kind of lame especially because my favorite author Chuck Palahniuk wrote Fight Club and Gillian Flynn wrote Gone Girl. Both titles are some of my absolute FAVORITES.

In fact…I cant even GET INTO how annoyed I am that Gillian Flynn ONLY has three books out. All of which I read in one nail-biting, counter productive, balls to the wall weekend. But I digress….

My preferred reading material is: non fiction philosophy and business/productivity. And for fiction I’m much more interested in suspense, horror, and dark stories. So my recommendations will probably be very that.

Its crazy reminiscent of a Hitchcock movie and the  fog of confusion and suspense is palpable.

The premise of it (as printed on the book):

Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

I DID in fact predict the ending but it wasn’t as transparent a twist that I feel most “who dunnit” kind of books have lately. The ending was VERY satisfying and I found myself deeply invested and concerned about the complex anti-hero of the story Rachel. I couldn’t stop thinking about it, talking about it..and sadly I haven’t found a Fiction book this year SINCE that had me looking around the room after it was over thinking “What the EFF just happened?!?!”

In short:

Read the damn book. Thank me later.

What are YOUR favorite books right now? I’m always on the prowl.

Love you guys!

Classic Red Lip Makeup Tutorial

Hey guys!

I’m not going to lie…I am kinda back tracking a bit here. But I didn’t want to neglect the opportunity to write a blog post about some of the YouTube videos that I posted earlier in the year. ESPECIALLY when it’s in relation to the most universally flattering, timeless, and glamorous makeup looks that you can wear!

EVERYONE looks great in a red lip. But strange enough I have had several conversations with SEVERAL clients swearing up and down, left and right that they CAN NOT pull it off. What I have found over the years that the culprit is NOT some predestined curse against you and your red lipstick is IN FACT a matter of finding the RIGHT shade of red and the right formula.

As far as I’m concerned the ONLY way to go with a red lip (in terms of formula) is matte. In fact…I really only like bright lip colors to be matte. I think it looks much more chic, classic, clean, AND it tends to last for hours and hours without need of touch up or the dreaded lipstick on the teeth nightmare:

At the time of filming this video..

The whole LIME CRIME scandal hadn’t quite broken. So I used my old tried and true stand by red lip favey: Lime Crime Red Velvet Velveteen Liquid Lipstick. I’m not a fan of the whole mob mentality thing..and I personally have never had problems with this company. BUT I do recognize the obvious lack of proper business practices and honesty that the company itself has demonstrated over the past several months. With that said…look into the company before you buy and purchase at your own risk.

Should you decide against purchasing with the company I MUST recommend my other classic red lip stand by (also universally flattering and long wearing) which is by MAC in the shade Ruby Woo.

Jennifer Lopez Makeup Tutorial: Golden Globes 2015

Im definitely not an award show hound. I just don’t GET IT honestly….I think now a days our society is way too obsessed with celebrities…and its kinda getting outta hand. I understand getting excited about their performances in films, tv, or their albums but red carpets have literally nothing to do with that so..yeah I just don’t care. Not super interested in hearing what Lays chips Jennifer Lawrence ate in the limo on the way there or what underwear Johnny Depp is wearing under his tux (ok…thats a TOTAL lie).

BUT I always scour the internets the day after an awards show to get inspiration for looks make up wise. I feel like the “trend” for red carpet season nine times out of ten is the old “no makeup makeup ” stand by. Not that I don’t love that look or think it has its merits under all those lights and hundred of photog cameras flashing BUT it can get repetitive and boring to me after a while. NO HATE. My hat goes off to the amazing artists who perfected and finessed that timeless and beautiful no fuss no muss glow..but I like the drama in my makeup. Shocker right?

Jennifer Lopez is an effin POD peerson Im convinced. WHO LOOKS LIKE THAT!?

Her makeup was bomb and I felt like doing my version of it.

Look at the weave on me today, ‘eh?

Lets just jump RIGHT in

Heres the video and full review. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy!!!

Teal Sparkly Smokey Eye

Hey guys!

I decided that I was going to try to do something a little bit fun, glittery, and smokey! I initially was going to post a New Years Eve video but when I ran out of time for all of that, I still had a craving to share a fun party makeup..any-dang-ways!

In the tutorial I use a glitter that I found at Sallys Beauty Supply. You definitely can use any glitter your sweet lil heart desires, but as I mention in the video MAKE SURE ITS COSMETIC grade. I can’t tell you the horror that over comes me when someone tells me that they get their glitter from *dun dun dun* Michael’s!!! The difference between cosmetic grade and craft grade is : Cosmetic grade is typically made out of  some kind of plastic and graft grade is made out of aluminum. Obviously you run a risk of using glitter no matter what its made out of but I think we can both agree a shard of tiny aluminum will probably yield the most damage.

Holiday Makeup Look: Neutral, Smokey, Sparkle

Hey guys!

I decided to go ahead and upload a new holiday makeup tutorial! This one I feel is a bit more “wearable” versus the Cranberry one. I also feel like this one can be worn any time of year and for any kind of occasion. Funny story: When I sat down to film this I knew that I wanted it to be a bronzy smokey eye that I was THINKING of pairing with a berry lip. And then it kinda took on a  life of its own and wound up looking more of a taupey/silvery/grey looking color. Then I paired it with nude lips instead of bold. Most times I plan my looks out before I film, other times I just sit down and start going for it. Often that works out pretty good other times my look just ISNT what I planned on. But in this case..I still liked it and I hope you will as well! 🙂

I hope all your holidays are going amazing and you are enjoying time with your friends and loved ones. Im kinda glad to see 2014 go. There were many blessings and positive aspects but a lot of things that definitely were NOT so great at all.

WHILE I HAVE YOU: If you have attempted to email from the Contact Me portion of my blog..PLEASE try me again! I just found out that its been defective! In real life though…one of my major resolutions for 2015 is to get all of my email accounts emptied, categorized, and streamlined. I think Ive missed out on more work opportunities than I care to even attempt to count because of inefficient email systems on my part. #BringBackSnailMail

Cranberry Crush Holiday Makeup Tutorial

Hey guys!

So Im trying a new thing where I link all of my new tutorials to my blog for product info! Its a way of tricking myself into being more involved on my blog. Which is one of my New Years resolutions. Yes, I am already thinking in terms of New Years Resolutions. One of the bigger ones (coinciding with blogging more often) is to expand my reach as far as the content that I am going to create. I would really like to move into fashion, lifestyle, health and fitness as well. Not that I am an expert necessarily in any of these things but I am passionately curios about it and love researching and trying new things that I would love to share with you guys!!

I was very inspired by the cranberry and deep berry tones of the season. Im aware this look can be a bit overwhelming but I wear it often during the holidays and always gets TONS of compliments.

If it feels a bit bold for you feel free to exchange the bold lip for something a bit more on the nude side.
